Project: Three-Six-Five

For some time now I have been pondering on taking up a photo project just for the fun of creating art of some sort for no reason at all.  Sarah and I like to think of ourselves as working artists (as opposed to the starving kind), using the media of photography to express our endeavors.  However, like many passions practiced in the pursuit of monetary gain, they fail to keep the flame of passion at a bonfire like blaze.  My father always told me if you find something you love to do and get paid for it, it no longer becomes a job.  That is true in its basic premise, but like any job, whether you love to do it or you are passionate about it, there are mundane tasks involved that sap the excitement and love right away.  That’s where Three-Six-Five comes into play.  This past February during our trip to the WPPI convention in glitzy Las Vegas I came to the realization that if I dare call myself a photographer then I better well start living the life of one.  For me that meant not just pressing the shutter release for a paycheck or whilst on vacation doing your basic touristy type of photography, but also while just plain ole living.  I wondered why I couldn’t make it a goal to take at least one photo a day.  It didn’t have to be anything great or earth shattering or even what you would consider “art.”  Just one a day – at least one.  Yes, I’ll have to get in the habit of bringing my camera with me more often (and not just that thing they call a camera on my phone). Can’t be that difficult right?  Well, I guess it was difficult enough that I put it off until the end of April to actually implement.  So, today, which just so happens to coincide with Sarah’s birthday is day one.  Next year at this date there should be at least three hundred and sixty five images produced through this project.  I can’t promise a daily posting due to several factors including, but not limited to, travel, full day weddings, etc., etc.  I can promise however, that I will make up for those postings with several of the daily images lumped together.

Right.  So here goes.  The images below are day one.  Since I am longing for the warm embrace of Spring that has been so elusive this year I thought I’d get some shots of the early signs of life in my yard.

The front garden coming alive finally.  I still have many daffodils waiting to bloom.  I think this will be a regular shot during the project to help document the garden’s birth, growth and death throughout the year.

And, last but not least, the first fruit from my shiitake mushroom patch this year.  This dude was large enough to pick but still had yet to drop its spores.  Guess I got a little too excited about cooking this up with some eggs and harvested it about a day or two too soon.  No worries though, there are several more sprouting right now with many more to come once Old Man Winter finally takes his leave.
